Saudi King, Congratulate Senegal's President on Independence Day

JEDDAH: Saudi King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman extended their congratulations to Senegal's President Bassirou Diomaye Faye on the occasion of his country's Independence Day on Friday.

In a message, King Salman wished President Faye "continued good health and happiness," and expressed hopes for "steady progress and prosperity" for the Senegalese government and people.

The Crown Prince sent a similar message, according to the report. Senegal celebrates its Independence Day annually on April 4th, marking the day in 1960 when it signed a transfer of power agreement with France to form the Mali Federation with French Sudan.

The union was short-lived, and the two dissolved it later that year, with French Sudan becoming the Republic of Mali.

In 1982, Senegal and neighboring Gambia formed the Confederation of Senegambia, but it was dissolved in 1989 due to incomplete integration.

Faye, the current president, emerged victorious in the March 2024 election, defeating incumbent president Macky Sall.
